Juxtaposing the figures of the “American Writer” and “Pilipino Writer” in America is in the Heart - Literature Essay Samples

Carlos Bulosan’s America Is in the Heart meditates on the place of Filipino writers within American literature. In America Is in the Heart, there are two â€Å"types† of writers that are presented: â€Å"American writers† and â€Å"Filipino writers.† Carlos Bulosan characterizes â€Å"American writers† as ones who emphasize hope and â€Å"Filipino writers† as ones who emphasize anger in order to demonstrate the effect of extreme social and legal discrimination against Filipino men. Because Filipino men like Carlos were treated so unkindly by America when they arrived, they often became consumed with hate. The figure of the angry Filipino writer is a caricature of the ill-treated men who often retreated into scorn towards America, its people, and its apparent hopelessness. The â€Å"Filipino writers† that Carlos Bulosan introduces in America Is in the Heart all share a deep-rooted anger and hopelessness. While walking on Canon Perdido Street with Marian, Carlos meets a Filipino bus boy who tells him, â€Å"I’ll be the greatest Filipino novelist in my time!† (216). Carlos explains, â€Å"His urge to write was spurred by hate. I recalled another lonely Filipino writer who had committed suicide, and I felt sorry for Florencio. I knew that he would destroy himself like Estevan, who had jumped from the window of his hotel when starvation had reached his mind† (216). Carlos compares Florencio and Estevan to comment on their shared impetus to write. Florencio writes because of hate; his response to the injustice that is dealt to him is to mediate his anger through writing. By juxtaposing the two Filipino writers, Carlos explicitly links hate with destruction. He describes the moment that Estevan comes undone as when â€Å"starvati on had reached his mind†; as malnutrition starves the body, Carlos indicates that hate starves the mind. If Florencio and Estevan represent one type of Filipino writer that responds to injustice with anger, Marian urges Carlos to respond with love. Before Marian dies, she requests of him, â€Å"promise me not to hate. But love – love everything good and clean† and leaves him with money to attend school (219). Throughout their time together, Marian is constantly telling Carlos to go to school; therefore, education and writing becomes one avenue through which he can â€Å"love everything good and clean.† Carlos maintains the countenance that Marian longs for him to express during his time in the hospital. By reading the American authors that Eileen provides him, Carlos feels that I was at home with the young American writers and poets. Reading them drove me back to the roots of American literature – to Walt Whitman and the tumult of his time. And from him, from his passionate dream of an American equality for all races, a tremendous idea burned my conscious. Wo uld it be possible for an immigrant like me to become a part of the American dream? (239). Carlos explains that one function of literature is to evoke empathy from its reader. Carlos feels at â€Å"home† with young American writers and poets because they speak of issues that affect people across different generations and continents. He is particularly affected by texts written during the civil rights era because he recognizes versions of his experiences within them. This democratization of writing makes Carlos contemplate his ability to impact the American dream, specifically through literature. Dora Tavers tells Carlos, â€Å" ‘Write more poems . . . I don’t care if you are a communist or not. I like your music. I think you will be a great American poet.’ I was glad. I felt inspired. Yes, there was music in me, and it was stirring to be born† (224). It is noteworthy that Dora tells Carlos that she believes he can be a great American poet because she minimizes his concerns that his race will bar him from writing. For a person who is constantly reading biographies of specifically Filipino and Asian writers to discover how minorities can overcome the barriers to publishing, it is verily significant that Dora tells him that he does not have to stay within a subordinate class of authors because he is Filipino. Writing, then, opens the possibility of becoming part of the American dream. But unlike Florencio and Estevan, who write due to anger, Carlos establishes an ephemeral and delicate connotation in his writing. Both Dora and Carlos describe it as musical; instead of being inspired by hate, Carlos is compelled to write poetry after feeling â€Å"a slight tug at my heart† as he watches Dora sleep. This type of inspiration allows his writing to serve as a mechanism for self-invention and autonomy, as a way of expressing something â€Å"stirring to be born.† In America Is in the Heart, Carlos Bulosan presents a dichotomy of writers. It appears that there are â€Å"American writers† who write out of love and â€Å"Filipino writers† who write out of hatred. It seems that Filipino writers are only capable of writing from a place of anger because doing so is the expected response of a person who has been treated horribly by a country’s laws and people. Carlos, however, demonstrates that through encouragement and counsel from people who care, it is possible to overcome hatred with love. He finally becomes an â€Å"American writer† and all that the term embodies.

Nursing Shortage Reform And Patient Advocacy Act - 1560 Words

We hear nurse’s talk about how rewarding their profession is but what they seldom talk about is how it can be very challenging as well. There seems to be many issues existing in the nursing profession. One of the most affective issues in nursing is the decreasing number of staff nurses. With inadequate staffing, nurses are demanded to have more responsibilities thus causing more stress on the nurse. This increase in responsibility causes nurses to neglect many aspects of their patients’ care. Patient care is suffering from the shortage of nurses as there is an increase in adverse patient outcomes due to the shortage. Also, there is evidence that there is a positive relationship between the number of staff and the effectiveness of their teamwork. The more staff available the more likely nurses will work together as a team. A new act is being implemented to help with the nursing shortage. The Relation Between Abuse Neglect And Delinquency Essays - Crimes

The Relation Between Abuse Neglect And Delinquency The Relation between Abuse, Neglect And Delinquency ABSTRACT This research paper is to make known the problems of maltreatment, and the affects the individual is made to deal with. This needs to be taken into account when there is a delinquent act performed. This is not an excuse that should be used for all delinquent acts though. Parents need to realize, they brought this child into the world and now it is there duty to raise them with proper values and morals. The child needs to be looked after, making sure there is no unnecessary harm being done to him/her. I believe that maltreatment does influence an adolescent in becoming a delinquent. The individual learns that this is acceptable behavior from the people that have the most influence in their lives. Once they realize that this is not a tolerated behavior they tend to act out in all sorts of forms, upon themselves and others. They now hold no fear in defying society. I am gathering some of my data from my own experiences (and others soon to follow) from the Perkins School (Lancaster). This school is a home for the time being for abused children and adolescents. They try to teach the individuals how society works and what is accepted and behavior adjustments. This school does not try to cure them, but to help them understand and deal with their difficulties. The remaining part of my research came from journal articles and books. In my findings, I am implying that maltreatment affects a child a great deal, most likely for a severe amount of one's life. The emotions that are built up in the child are going to cause outbursts of anger, confusion, anxiety, hostility and distrust. Depending upon the intensity and the length the maltreatment occurs for assists in explaining the consequences the individual may portray due to the maltreatment. INTRODUCTION Do forms of abuse and neglect within the family bring about delinquency among the youth? Presumably, yes, maltreatment does have an influence upon delinquent behaviors. Maltreatment is referred to as the parental behaviors that are considered acts intended to inflict physical or psychological harm and that reflect a lack of concern for the adolescent's well-being, sense of self, and social competence. (Brezina, Timothy) Maltreatment causes neurological damage, deficits in cognitive socioemotional functioning, and learning of antisocial problem solving and failure in school. Depending upon the severity and length of time of the maltreatment put onto the child determines the level of violent behavior put forth by the juvenile. Severe physical, psychological, and neurological consequences can come about because of maltreatment. These consequences may impair the child's ability to socially integrate in various ways. Within the last ten years studies have found strong associations between inadequate parental nurture, harsh or erratic discipline, and delinquent or violent behavior in childhood and adolescence. This does not mean that all delinquents were abused or neglected. Some come from what appear to be model homes. I chose this topic because of a few reasons. Recently I started working at the Perkins School, which is a residential program for abused (physically, sexually, and mentally) children. These children can no longer live with their family in the home. Some of the children do not even have people to call family or a place to call home, except Perkins. Every one of these children have behavioral problems, some more severe than others, due to the trauma they have been through. Seeing how defenseless these children were/are to the abuse and how much it affects their behavior is mind boggling. Today's society seems out to punish the delinquents for their behavior. But does society look at the whole picture? Life at home, their morals and values learned through their parents should also be examined as well. Children are like clay, what is molded and pounded into them hardens and is that way until it is melted and restructured. People need to take into consideration how they were raised and what was taught to them their whole life. Yet, there are exceptions to this. Some children just have problems brought about on their own. LITERATURE REVIEW The article Adolescent Maltreatment and Delinquency: The Question of Intervening Processes in the 'Journal

the life of Jackie Robinson essays

the life of Jackie Robinson essays Jackie Robinson, actually called Jack Roosevelt Robinson, was born on in Cairo, Georgia in 1919 to a family of sharecroppers. His mother, Mallie Robinson, single- handedly raised Jackie and her four other children. They were the black family on their block, and the prejudice they encountered only strengthened their bonds. From this humble beginning would grow the first baseball players to break the Major League Baseball's color barrier that segregated it for more than 50 years. When Jackie was only sixteen months old, his father left. His mother decided to move the family out to California. When they got to California they lived with his mother's brother, Burton. Before they arrived at California, his mother had made arrangements to find other living conditions because; Burton's house would be over-crowded, so Jackie's mother took a job washing and ironing clothes. There was not enough money from her job though, so she went to welfare for help. Welfare added to her salary, which barely made enough to keep them alive. The family, at times did not have enough food to eat and his mother would bring scraps from her job to feed them. His mother was a very busy person, and she always went to work before sunrise, and always returned from work late. When she was home, she was usually exhausted, but she still made the energy to help her kids and take care of them. One time, a girl in the neighborhood ran up to Jackie and called him "Niger, Niger, Niger." He had retaliated by calling her "cracker." When he called her that, she went and told her father and he stormed out of the house. He and Jackie had a stone- throwing fight until the father's wife came out and took her husband inside. From then on, all the white people in the neighborhood signed a petition to get them thrown out of the neighborhood. Jackie's mother stood her ground and would not make anybody force them to leave. ...

Analysing Risk Management In Holiday And Hospitality Industries Tourism Essay

Analysing Risk Management In Holiday And Hospitality Industries Tourism Essay Loyalty of guests and tourists is created only by strong relationships where the guest feels special and important. Generally, people go to a hotel or plan for a trip on an emotional feeling. The feeling should be good, risk free, safe, and effective and even to increase their confidence. Almost all guests go to a hotel for the same reason. If the hotel gives them a homely feeling then they will come over there again and again. But, if the hotel is not making them feel important or special, they will buy it somewhere else. The loyalty of customers is totally dependent upon how safe they feel at hotel. They should feel important and special. They should get proper attention by the hotel they dealing with. The hotel should believe that the guests coming to the hotel are an important part of servicing customer needs. In order to make a loyal guest, we need to go ahead of their expectations from the hotel. The WTO (World Tourism Organization) had conducted a research on tourism all acro ss the world. They have provided some of the critical and interesting facts on the contribution of Tourism and Hospitality Industry to the whole world. The Average Annual Increase is 4.0 %. But his sector is also facing a number of risks and we are trying to manage those risks! The main aim of the risk management process is to increase the prospects and opportunities and decrease the consequences of a risk event. During the whole process, there are common conventional stressors, but our reaction to those stressors differs from person to person as we are all unique persons. The anxiety and confusion that come from not knowing what lies ahead can create stress. People used to utilize basic defenses when high degree of uncertainty arises. In this state of vagueness, generally people easily way out to disbelieve, removal and self-defense. Individuals are told that the ways used in old days are no longer functioning and often this note becomes modified that they are not appreciated. We n eed to work hard to manage any kind of risk successfully. When everything is planned carefully, the proper foundation is being built, launching a product becomes much easier, and we can improve the chances of success. If we are too impatient, and if we expect too many results too soon, our plans for change are more likely to fail. It is therefore of critical importance that the present tourism systems should be considerably made stronger to give comfort to the tourists from all across the world. www.gov.ab.ca/edt/tda/abstats.htm B.C. Advertising Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Advertising - Assignment Example From the modest beginning, today it has grown into a consumer product giant with 400 brands. Their product portfolio includes those related to personal care, home care, food, hygiene, nutrition, health and beauty. These are used in more than 190 countries around the world, with dual headquarters in UK and Netherlands. Driven by strong and futuristic principles, the company registered a turnover of  £44.3 billion in 2010, the net profit being  £4.6 billion. It has 12 power brands that drive annual sales of more than  £1 billion. Unilever is a workplace for around 170,000 employees. The company’s success is hugely attributable to its belief in maintaining high standards of corporate behavior, be it at the consumer, stakeholder or community participation levels (Unilever, 2011). The sustenance of a brand in consumer product sector is dependent on its promotion, which is again largely shouldered by advertising. This is because of the competition in the industry and the need to reach out even to the remote population, in order to tap some extra space in the market pie. The pull effect caused by advertising in the consumer product range far exceeds that resulting from other methods of promotion, mainly because of its reachability, influence on consumer preferences and buying decision (Lamb & Dunne, 2010). Unilever also abides by this mode of promotion, due to the widespread nature of its operations and multiplicity of products. It sees advertising as a medium to explain the benefits of Unilever’s products, while actively engaging the consumers in improving not only the company’s products, but their own lives. The advertising and promotional expenses of the company amounted to 5.6 billion euros in 2010 (Unilever, 2011). Ad Age Digital reports that this advertising budget of Unilever is ranked second highest investment by various

Ritz Carlton Hotels and Service quality Research Paper

Ritz Carlton Hotels and Service quality - Research Paper Example The Ritz Carlton has developed excellent service delivery strategies, which enable it to stay at the top (Reiss, 2009). This paper will look at some of the strategies, and how these ideas have shaped the way for other hotels to embrace service quality as a means of acquiring and retaining customers. For the Ritz Carlton, customer service is something they invest in, offering their employees more than a hundred hours of customer service education so as to ensure their preparedness when dealing with customers. When organizations in the hotel industry neglect the aspect of improving service quality in favor of cutting costs, they are doing a great disservice to their customers and the organization’s stakeholders. The Ritz Carlton, in its bid to be the best, implements the three steps of service, which involves; welcoming customers, anticipation and compliance, and fond farewells (Reiss, 2009). Customers create bonds and relationships with employees, hence; creating an exceptional reputation in the whole industry. In the three steps of service, a warm welcome is part of the package for customers. Whenever guests arrive, it is customary to greet them and address them using their names when and if possible. In this strategy, there is the anticipation and fulfillment of the guests needs. In this case, the employees anticipate what the guest’s needs may be, and helps in fulfilling them to the customer’s satisfaction. This brings in a cordial relationship between the people involved. A fond farewell, which is part of this package, enables the customers to feel like they are leaving a part of them behind, which makes it easier to make a return whenever possible (Verma, 2012). The ‘twelve service values’ is a strategy that allows the employees to bring forth the brand’s promise to its customers and guests. In this strategy, each starts with letter â€Å"I†, which works to demonstrate the power

COMPOSITE MATERIALS Essay -- Sturctures, Types, Mechanical Propertie

The word composite comes from the latin â€Å"composititus† meaning made up of distinct parts. A composite material is a material composed of two or more distinct materials[1], or constituents, with one constituent acting as the reinforcing phase and the other as the matrix[6]. A composite material is defined by having different macroscopic behaviours, or chemical and physical properties then its constituent materials, and has a distinct interface boundary on the microscopic level[5]. Structure of Composites In a composite material the constituents are arranged generally with the reinforcement phase embedded in the matrix phase. Due to a composite being essentially a mixture between the reinforcement phase and the matrix there is no intermolecular bonding between the two, however, as in the case of fibrous composites, the most mechanically efficient structure is a criss-crossed fibrous lattice suspended in a material matrix. In the case of particulate composites however, the reinforcement phase acts essentially to strengthen the matrix material adding support. Types of Composites Composite materials are usually classified according to the type of their reinforcement phase. The two main types of composites are fibrous composites and particulate composites, which may again be divided further. In fibrous composites the fibres acting as the reinforcement, may be either continuous or chopped, and suspended in a material matrix. In composites in which the reinforcement phase is composed of either chopped or discontinuous fibres, the composite may have an either random or biased orientation. They may be used to make single layer composites or lamina. Capitalism and the American Dream

SOCI 2013 17 April 2013 How Capitalism Affects the American Dream Capitalism is defined as â€Å"an economic system in which the ownership of the means of production- like land, factories, large sums of money, and machines – is in private hands† (SOC 10). Social Philosopher Karl Marx strongly believed that in the end, capitalism simply wouldn’t work for several different reasons. His idea became known as Marxian conflict theory. While the functionalist theory examines groups’ order and cohesion, the conflict theory examines ways groups disagree and struggle for power.Marx predicted that capitalism would cause continuous tension between the haves and the have -not’s; the have-not’s mostly being the minorities and the poor. He believed that capitalist societies would be reduced to two social classes; the capitalist class (the bourgeoisie or the rich) and the working class (the proletariat or the poor), and that this division would eventually ca use some sort of social upheaval. Generation Y is in trouble with the years to come seeing as it is against the odds that one will becomes part of the small percentage of people that are the capitalists. If our economic system remains the same, the generations to come will become nothing more than workers for the bourgeoisie. Karl Marx gave five reasons in particular as to why capitalism will fail. It will result in monopolies, inflation, unemployment, lack of income, and the wealthy ultimately ruling the world and making the rules. This all will result in reduced quality goods, poverty, poor legislation, and people not being able to afford the necessities of life. The first reason Marx gave as to why capitalism won’t work is that in a capitalist economy, monopolies are unavoidable. A monopoly is when one supplier of a particular commodity is the only supplier. Monopolies eliminate competition. This gives the supplier the power to charge high prices and reduce the quality of th e products because the consumers don’t have any other choices. An example of this would be cable TV verses things like Dish TV, the iPad, and Netflix. Not as many people want to pay for cable when it is much easier and cheaper to view television shows and movies n other ways. The same concept is happening to land line phones. Gasoline companies are obvious example of monopolies, in which the easiest mode of transportation is a motor vehicle. In this case, people eventually will have no choice but to purchase gasoline. OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) now controls 46% of all the oil produced in the world, making it a huge global monopoly. Paying high prices for lower quality products will only cause more and more problems for future generations. The second reason Marx gave was that because there is no centralized planning in capitalism, meaning that over-production of products is inevitable, and in turn, causes inflation and depressions. Over production is when too many goods are produced and supply outdoes demand. Companies are left with stocks they cannot sell and are forced to shut down as a result. Another reason capitalism doesn’t work is that unemployment levels are raised. Demands for labor saving machinery force employers to let people go.The worldwide unemployment rate is 6% while the United States, a capitalistic economy, has an unemployment rate of about 8%. According to Marx, unemployment is unavoidable in our economic system. Unemployment also plays into the fourth reason Marx gave, which is that employers will try to maximize their profits by reducing labor expenses and firing people, thus creating a situation where the unemployed don’t have enough income to buy the goods produced, creating the contradiction of causing profits to fall, which starts the cycle all over again. The fifth, and perhaps the most startling reason Marx gave, is that the control of the state will be by the wealthy, the effect of wh ich is laws benefiting themselves. The wealthiest 1% of people in the United States control 42% of the wealth in our country. Many of these super rich are the ones that own the monopolies like the oil suppliers or are politicians that make laws that are ultimately in their favor. Even if a person in the generations to come were to work hard and have a good paying, stable job, it is still very unlikely that they will be one of he super rich, allowing them to be safe from the current and/or potential economic depressions. Thus, it is safe to conclude that Marx was correct in his predictions that a capitalistic country will eventually fail. Works Cited Amadeo, Kimberly. â€Å"Monopoly. † About. com. N. p.. Don t Pull The Trigger On Gun Control - 1029 Words

Don’t Pull the Trigger on Gun control Have you ever wondered why the United States always seems to have mass shootings in the news? Well, this is why gun control should be mandated in the America. Gun control is a debate fueled by the recent shootings of Colombine, Sandy Hook, Marysville Pilchuck, and the recent shooting at a social center. Gun control is a proposal to ban or further restrict gun laws, gun control has been put in place in many other countries such as Canada, The United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and most of the other developed nations. What’s stopping gun control from being passed is the NRA and other lobbyists say gun control violates the Second Amendment in the Constitution. There should be gun control because it will†¦show more content†¦However, today there is the military and there is no use for the guns. The Gun Control Act of 1968 was put in place after a mass shooting at the University of Texas. As well after, the murders of John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Robert F Kennedy. That law prohibited the transfer of guns between states without a license. Then in 1994, there was a ban on assault weapons, which banned certain semiautomatic weapons and guns with military features. However, that law expired, and was not renewed due to the NRA’s lobbying efforts. An unacknowledged side effect of gun control is the sheer cost of gun violence. In 2010, the United States lost 5.5 billion dollars in tax revenue due to gun violence. That is $564 per person. The lost tax revenue consists of, 1.4 Billion for Medicade and Medicare. Just the response to gun crimes with medics and police cost $133 million (Pro-con.org). Costs also include, 180 million for mental health care for victims and $224 million for processing insurance claims(Pro-con.org). Putting the criminals through the justice system also takes $4.7 Billion (Pro-con.org). All of this money could be used to improve schools and other parts of society. Gun control needs to be instated because it will reduce suicides and mass shootings. Between 1999 and 2013 guns were the number one choice in crimes. shown by the fact that a gun was used in 66.6% of all homicides(pro-con.org). During this period guns were used in 52.2% of all suicides.
