Platos Symposium What is the meaning of have sex? What does love feel like? How does love espouse about? No one can truly explain it, yet somehow its understood. In Platos Symposium, a dinner party was held with the discussion of love as the main topic. Everyone was required to make a speech, an ode to Love, the spirit. The philosopher, Socrates gave his speech last, claiming that his speech was merely a repetition of what a wise woman named Diotima once told him. The speech was a powerful one, but out front the night was over, a drunk Alcibiades entered. He was asked to make a eulogy for Love as well, but instead, talked about the nature of Socrates. The nature of Love and the nature of Socrates turned out to be extremely similar. In the Symposium, Socrates can be seen as the embodiment of Love itself. The notion of love that was understood at the end of the Symposium came about gradually. It transformed from speaker to speaker over the course of the party, and could be compared to the whole process of understanding love that Socrates tried and true to explain in his own speech. Its complexity was attained by taking small steps in a larger direction. Diotima explained to Socrates, that to attain the deepest love, he had to go along a certain order. Much like stepping up on the rungs in a ladder(211c), loves nature started small, with Phaedrus and Pausinas merely stating that there was good love and liberal love. This was the first step, starting with beautiful things(211c) and making those things reason for... ascent(211c) up the proverbial ladder. The story takes a ton of twist and turns that involve a container of antimatter, the Catholic Church and a dead priests secret. Even though both of these books were written in different times and with totally different plots they still both bring to light the battle between science and religion that may never diminish. Victor Frankenstein is obsessed with his to attempt to bring in a human. He works on it constantly alienating friends and loved ones. His obsession is finally rewarded with success he manages to perform a monster. This is where Mary Shelley starts to bring in the lesson of playing God. When Victor looks at his creation, he sees what a horror he has created and how hideous a creature it is. No mortal could support the horror of that countenance. A mummy again endued with animation could not be so hideous as that wretch (Shelley 44). Shelley shows that man cannot create things witho ut messing it up. This is would not be the last time that scientist went to far to attempt to create perfection. The settings in this book changed many times from the hills of the Shire, where the hobbits live, to the deep darkness of the mines of Moria. The book takes backside in Middle Earth, which is described by Tolkien as a mysterious place that is full of good and evil. The way Tolkien described each place is amazing and it is as if you were looking at a picture and copying it down into your head. The setting in the book is very important to the story. It kept me view and wondering what was going to happen next, which made me read more and more. I couldnt even begin to describe the setting of the whole book, so I mainly mentioned some of the major locations that took place in the book.In the book, the Protagonist is Frodo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire who becomes the Ring-bearer. The Antagonist is Sauron, the Dark Lord that forged the One Ring to take over Middle-Earth. In the family unit, aside for the ring-bearer, are three other hobbits, Samwise Gamgee, Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck, three of Frodos closest friends. There is also Gandalf, the wizard Legolas Greenleaf, son of the goblin King of Northern Mirkwood the dwarf Gimli, son of Gloin Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and heir to the throne of Gondor and Boromir, oldest son of the Steward of Gondor. They all have some talent or exercise in aiding Frodo in the quest.As the action rises the mood is often tense with suspense and a sense of doom. They are in constant danger, always organism watched or hunted. The hobbits leave their precious homes and travel through the Old Forest to get to Bree, where they meet Aragorn and he aids them in their journey. His affair with Julia boosts his ego and so he continues with the hope that other rebels will unite with him against the Party. Unfortunately, in his dream of defeating Big Brother, Winston becomes careless and his acts against the Party take him down a dangerous path, leading him into torturous consequences. Winston allows himself to take superfluous risks, such as trusting OBrien.Unknowingly, the room he rents above Mr. Charringtons shop to meet with Julia is under surveillance. Mr. Charrington, a member of the Thought Police, uses the telescreen to capture Winstons sexual affair with Julia. As a member of the Thought Police, it is his duty to turn them in, and he doe s. He has the two arrested and they are sent to the Ministry. Winstons carelessness now comes back to haunt him. In his eagerness to find others who loathe the system, he trusted OBrien who led him to believe that he shares his shame for Big Brother. However, Winston soon learns that OBriens intentions are quite different. When Winston is caught, OBrien visits him to help him through this wretchedness.However, Winstons misplaced trust is exploited whenOBrien preys on his biggest fear. He is taken to Room 101 where he is tortured both physically and mentally with his ultimate revulsion rats. Winstons fortitude collapses, changing his perspective. it was all right, everything was all right. The struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother. (Orwell 311). Winstons physical pain and mental anguish help him to now embrace the unquestionable power and wisdom of the Party. The irony is evident Winstons determination to defeat Big Brother is defeated by B ig Brother.In Winstons pursuit to gain independent thought, he struggles against the absolute power of the Party, thus demonstrating the battle between him and his government. In Oceania, the Party controls the people physically, mentally and emotionally in order to maintain their supremacy. However, the Partys abusive power subverts Winstons morality, aggravating him into rebellion. Once started, Winston realizes that he cannot turn back from his revolt, even though, intellectually he acknowledges that his battle could cost him far more than his freedom. He is driven to continue. Winstons fervour for change comes to an immediate halt after he is caught and punished for his disloyalty to the Party. A man forever changed becomes a loyal supporter of Big Brother. Orwells 1984 is a frightening journey of a mans fight for freedom of thought and expression. In 1948, when the book was written it was considered a futuristic view of society. Today, many of the events have already become a r eality. Of these patients approximately 22% take medication in quantities lesser than the amount recommended, 12% do non fill their prescription and 12% procure the medication but forego them entirely. Though race, ethnicity and board have not been reported to be a risk fact or for medication non-adherence, the issue is rendered critical among elderly patients due to the high vulnerability of this age group to chronic illnesses (Kocureck, 2009). In the light of above discussion the importance of research investigating the various aspects of the medication adherence in elderly population is highlighted. The current research aims to examine the prevalence range of medication adherence in elderly population. Literature Review High prevalence and large economic burden of medical non adherence has led to extensive studies and investigations enabling an understanding of the issue and devising adherence strategies. However despite the prolific research conducted during the last three decades an optimal strategy is lacking and thence the prevalence rates for non adherence are still on a rise. An estimated 100 billion dollar bill remains the annual cost of dealing with complications such as hospitalization, disability, disease aggravation mortality etc result ing as a consequence of non adherence (Wertheimer & Santella, 2003). On the basis of causes of non-adherence two types of medication non-adherence have been identified lettered and unintentional. While the latter has been attributed to forgetfulness or incidental causes the former is usually reported in patients who have been winning medications but discontinue upon feeling better or worse. However later research has shown that patients belief is an important contributor to forgetfulness in taking medication rendering forgetting to take medication not a purely unintentional type of non-adherence (Unni, 2008). The major obstacles to medication resulting in non-adherence include forgetfulness, different priorities, metrical omission of doses, information deficit and certain psychological factors. While the aforementioned factors are at least partially under the control of patients, certain factors such as cost, patient lifestyle inconsistent with medication timing and complex medic ation regime are important contributing factors attributed to the health care provider (Osterberg & Blaschke, 2005).
